Expectations of Others As for #3, what we mean by this is that when you are out there networking,
talking with people, you might be fortunate to get lead on some one or some bit
of information that will be helpful to your job search. Quite often, people have
a tendency to say "let me give so-and-so a call" or "let me see if I have that
file in my office." At times, people simply don't have the time to fulfill their
offer. This is where you need to show appreciation for what they have shared and
offer to do the leg work. Feel free to say, "Well, I appreciate that. I know you
are busy these days. Would it be appropriate for me to call Mary Jones? Do you
think she would take my call?" Or if it's information, i.e., paperwork, a
website, a directory, don't leave the task of putting it together on the person
who has suggested it. You could say, "If you have that file at the office, why
don't I stop by and get it," or "That website is a great idea. Why don't we see
if I can find it." |
